How the progress estimate works

The Reading Time Estimator gives you an estimate of how long it will take to read a particular book. It uses the catalog’s median word count and reading speed to calculate a range.

The estimates are based on a typical reading pace of about 230 words per minute. The catalog’s median reading time is 201 minutes for a book of about 46,000 words. Use the estimator to find a book that fits your available time.

Quick Reads

Books under 20,000 words are labeled 'quick'. There are 19 such titles, most with reading times under 90 minutes. Good for a single sitting.

Steady and Immersive

Most books (51) are 'medium' length, between 20,000 and 60,000 words. They typically take 2 to 4 hours to read. 'Long' books (19) run 60,000–100,000 words, and 'epic' ones (2) exceed 100,000.

Time Categories

The catalog groups books by estimated reading time: quick (under 2 hours), steady (2–4 hours), immersive (4–6 hours), and marathon (over 6 hours). Use these to quickly filter.

Reading Tracker Guide

Making Steady Progress with the Reading Tracker

The Reading Tracker is a simple tool for anyone who wants to finish a book without losing momentum. It records progress in pages only—not chapters, not minutes. You set a daily page goal, and the tracker shows how many pages remain and estimates the number of days to completion.

For a concrete example, take The Mines and its Wonders — Inside the Classic. This book has a catalog word count of 26,940 words. With the default 250 words per page, that works out to about 108 pages. The estimated reading time is 118 minutes. If you set a daily goal of 20 pages, the tracker would estimate about 6 days to finish.

Setting Your Daily Page Goal

The default daily goal is 20 pages, which is a reasonable starting point for many readers. But you can adjust it up or down based on your schedule. If you have a busy week, 10 pages a day might be more realistic. If you are on vacation, 40 pages could be achievable. The tracker uses your goal to calculate estimated finish days.

The formula is simple: remaining pages divided by daily goal, rounded up. For The Mines and its Wonders, if you have read 20 pages and have 88 left, a 20-page goal means 5 more days. If you increase the goal to 30, you would finish in 3 days. The tool helps you see the trade-off between daily effort and overall duration.

Adjusting the Page Count

The tracker’s initial page estimate comes from the catalog’s word count divided by 250. But your physical book or e-reader may show a different total page count. You can replace the total with the number from your own edition. This is important because page counts vary widely by font size, margins, and trim size.

For example, if your edition of The Mines and its Wonders has 120 pages instead of 108, the tracker will adjust the remaining time proportionally. The estimated minutes are scaled by the ratio of remaining pages to total pages. So if you are halfway through a 120-page book, the tracker assumes you have about 59 minutes left, based on the original 118-minute estimate.

This flexibility means the tracker works with any edition, For readers who are reading a paperback, a PDF, or an e-book. You do not need an account; progress is saved in your browser’s local storage, so it persists between sessions on the same device.

Using the Tracker Effectively

The tracker is a planning tool, not a judge. It does not record sections or minutes as progress, so you should update it only when you finish pages. A good habit is to update your progress at the end of each reading session, then glance at the estimated finish date to plan your next session.

For a book like The Mines and its Wonders, with its 108-page estimate, a 20-page daily goal creates a natural rhythm: about five or six days of reading. If you prefer longer sessions, you might finish in three. The tracker simply reflects your choices.

Remember that the estimated reading time (118 minutes) is based on an average reader; your own pace may differ. The page-based approach is more concrete because it ties directly to your physical progress. Use the tracker to turn a vague goal like “read more” into a specific plan with a clear endpoint.
